After reports highlighting that Durham County Council spent £5.7 million on management consultants but denied children free travel to school, Councillor Becky Brunskill has been appealing to help get children to school. She stated “For parents who don’t have access to a car and where a bus isn’t an option (because there isn’t a service or it’s just too expensive) it means that young children spend the day at school tired or just don’t go as often as they should. ..it wouldn’t represent a huge cost implication for the support it will give to families. We are talking about investing a few more pounds in children who need it the most…This is the right thing to do so let’s do it. Because the problem isn’t going to go away it will be there this year, next year and every year until we tackle it.”
Rural poverty is a big issue within the constituency of North West Durham and children often have to travel a long way to school. This is yet another example of Labour not understanding rural issues and as a result our children's education is suffering.
